Time For Change in SD33: Rally In Support of DPAC

Given trustee Barry Neufeld’s continuing attacks on the LGBTQ+ community and the fact that he recently organized an email campaign against our DPAC president for daring to challenge him, it is important to rally once again to show that Chilliwack does not agree with Mr. Neufeld’s backward ideas. SOGI 123 is a program developed to bring BC schools in line with the Human Rights Code, and we believe it is disgraceful for any school trustee to oppose it. All other trustees in Chilliwack must stand up for what is right and demand Mr. Neufeld’s resignation.

Bahamas // January 16 // The Playhouse

Bahamas Earthtones Tour w The Weather Station Presented by Shivering Songs Tuesday January 16th Fredericton Playhouse Doors 7 // Show 8pm Tickets On Sale Friday November 3rd @10am Juno award winner Bahamas is the solo project of Toronto-based guitarist and musical gun-for-hire Afie Jurvanen. With a carefully trained ear for melody that he's honed during his time playing with the likes of Feist and Howie Beck, Jurvanen's solo project has a stripped-down and contemplative sound that focuses on doing more with less, allowing his voice and guitar to do most of the heavy lifting on his quiet indie folk meditations. Bahamas made its album debut in 2009 with Pink Strat, which was nominated for a Juno Award the following year. After releasing Pink Strat, Jurvanen set out on tour in support of alt-country icons Wilco before eventually striking out on his own with a headlining tour. The guitarist returned in 2012 with his follow-up album, Barchords. In 2014, he delivered the third Bahamas studio album, Bahamas Is Afie, which featured a '70s soft country-influenced vibe. His upcoming release, Earthtones, features the rhythm section of critically aclaimed artist D'Angelo with songs about success, having kids, and having depression, going on tour, going back in time and going in circles. An album which Jurvanen says, "It’s a very positive album about having a joie de vivre for the joys of ife. Okay, full disclosure...there’s a few slow jams too..." bahamasmusic.net 'The Weather Station' is the fourth—and most forthright—album by The Weather Station, the project of Toronto songwriter Tamara Lindeman. Her most fully realized statement to date, it isa work of profound urgency, artistic generosity, and joy. Self-titled and self-produced, the album unearths a vital new energy from Lindeman’s acclaimed songwriting practice, marrying it to a bold new sense of confidence.“I wanted to make a rock and roll record,” Lindeman explains, “but one that sounded how I wanted it to...

Complexities & Cloth

OPENING RECEPTION: January 16th, 2018 6pm - 9pm --- --In part of the Toronto Design Offsite Festival -- Hosted by Artscape Youngplace Exhibit runs from January 15th - 26th, 2018 Venue open from 8am-8pm: Complexities & Cloth looks at the detailed process involved in crafting woven textiles, while opening a dialogue with the fabrics of our time. Through the lens of hand weaving you are invited to take a closer look into the process of making cloth. Where each thread is calculated to bend over and under one another, creating the structural bonds that form our fabrics. Observing that within these bends of interwoven lines, lays the potential for delicate pattern work. Let your eyes indulge in the elegant subtleties of hand woven cloth, while your mind considers the complexities of how it was made. The designer and maker Dani Ortman brings a slow and thoughtful approach to crafting textiles. Designing contemporary patterns, thoughtfully sourcing yarns, hand dyeing colours, and weaving each piece on a traditional floor loom. She produces textiles that encourage the value of cloth be re-considered, as the precious commodity that it is. See more: todesignoffsite.com daniortman.com

Canada's Top Ten: Never Steady, Never Still

Join us for a special Canada's Top Ten Film Festival screening of Kathleen Hepburn's Never Steady, Never Still - Feature Film, along with an introduction and Q&A. The highly anticipated feature debut from Kathleen Hepburn, one of Canada's most promising young filmmakers, is a devastating examination of the costs of long-term illness. Shirley Henderson delivers a fearless, deeply moving performance as Judy, a woman who has battled Parkinson's disease nearly all her married life. As the illness exacts its toll, her husband, Eddie (Nicholas Campbell), struggles to care for her — and pushes their son Jamie (2017 TIFF Rising Star Théodore Pellerin) into adulthood, demanding he take a job far from home. Propelled by an acute empathy, Never Steady, Never Still - Feature Film boasts some of the most touching scenes you will see all year (Judy's recollection of Eddie's marriage proposal is a particular standout). Hepburn's compassion shines even in the ancillary characters: pregnant teenage shop clerk Kaly is the soul of generosity, beautifully played by Pellerin's fellow TIFF Rising Star Mary Galloway.
