Spectacular Optical and the Royal Cinema presents: SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL: The True Story of The Process Church of the Final Judgment MONDAY OCTOBER 23, 2017 8PM ***Q&A with Director Neil Edwards + Process Church member Brother Luke!*** In the late sixties and early seventies, a mysterious black-cloaked tribe wandered the streets of Toronto and several other North American cities, provoking and terrifying passers-by with their doomsday predictions and strange proclamations of a unity between Christ and Satan. When the weird group was awarded funding from the Canadian government, Toronto’s newspapers were outraged by the ‘GRANTS FOR SATANISTS!’ Today, if you Google ‘The Process Church of the Final Judgment’ you will discover a long list of lurid conspiracy theories. The cult was formed on the other side of the Atlantic, in early 1960s London, and recruited the children of wealthy families and the aristocracy. It has been accused of being the inspiration for Charles Manson's 'crimes of the century', influencing the assassination of Bobby Kennedy, and being the root of the notorious Son of Sam serial killings that terrorised New York. Ever since Britain's newspapers branded them the 'MINDBENDERS IN MAYFAIR' and 'THE DEVIL'S DISCIPLES', the group adopted a secretive stance with the media. Only now, decades later, have former members agreed to reveal the truth behind the conspiracy theories, and open up about their beliefs, rituals, sexual practices, and the closely guarded secret of the real power behind their supposed Messiah, Robert de Grimston. The film gets behind the veils of the cult with three gods - Jehovah, Lucifer, and Satan, and their journey from their formation in England’s swanky Mayfair district, through extreme wilderness experiences in Mexico, flirtations with pop royalty, and their spread through Canada and the USA that resulted in them being ‘christened’ ‘One of the most dangerous satanic cults in America’. Featuring contributions from several...

Cost: $10 (includes film and panel discussion) Space is limited. Registration will close when the event reaches capacity, or on Oct. 20, 2017. Explore a watershed moment in Canadian history, and deepen your understanding of the current push towards reconciliation at the screening of the documentary Journey Towards Reconciliation. In 2014, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission held seven national events across the country to gather testimony from former students of residential schools. A group of Indigenous youth, accompanied by Jodi Stonehouse, ’11 BA (NativeStu), Tracie Louttit and Aretha Greatrix, explored reconciliation in their own territory to document their own personal journey towards reconciliation. Through the lens of the camera they held, you’ll learn about the history of the residential schools and the personal connection tied to their legacy. Beginning with the creation of an Edmonton LRT station mural, as an act of reclamation, the documentarians explore intergenerational trauma and Indigenous resistance and resilience. This deeply moving, honest documentary gives an intimate look into the hearts and minds of Indigenous youth as they prepare for a future they will lead. ualberta.ca

NPR hailed him as “New Orleans’ brightest new star in a generation,” and New York Magazine wrote that “Trombone Shorty takes in a century-plus worth of sounds—ragtime and jazz and gospel and soul and R&B and hip-hop—and attacks everything he plays with festive fervor.” A 2011 GRAMMY Award nominee for his album Backatown (Verve), Andrews’ virtuosity and high-energy live shows have drawn unanimous raves worldwide with Rolling Stone calling him a “must-see act.” He was named to Forbes' “30 Under 30” Class of 2016 for Music along with Selena Gomez, The Weeknd and Jon Batiste. His illustrated autobiography for young readers, Trombone Shorty, was named a 2016 Caldecott Honor Book by the American Library Association. Andrews made his feature film debut in 2015—using his trombone to voice the iconic sound of the adult characters in the animated box office smash The Peanuts Movie. Andrews is passing down his musical knowledge and keeping the New Orleans brass band tradition alive through his own Trombone Shorty Foundation and Music Academy, and since 2014 has worked as a “Turnaround Artist'” with the Turnaround Arts Initiative, a program that helps low-performing schools improve through intensive arts programs. In a realm where poets rarely intersect with stardom, the Opening Ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympics introduced us to Shane Koyczan. With a collective “wow” across Canada and beyond, we found the poet of our generation. And we weren’t even looking for one. The world took notice when Shane’s influential, anti-bullying, To This Day Project video went viral in early 2013 with over 14 million views and counting. Powerfully engaging and authentic in attitude, his explorations are relevant to our times in the way that Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Downie and Leonard Cohen are to theirs. But unlike the musicians that he’s often compared to, poets rarely infiltrate pop culture. Koyzcan emerges in a new wave of 21st century poetry that dares to belong to the people and speak directly to them in their own voice. Shane Koyczan is not only a writer and spoken word virtuoso, but also a multi medium spoken word artist. His first published collection, Visiting Hours, was the only work of poetry selected by both the Guardian and the Globe and Mail for their Best Books of the Year lists in 2005. Destined to become a future classic, Visiting Hours is now in its third edition, and includes We Are More.
